OTDR Test Curve and Event Type

Test Curve

A picture is worth a thousand words, and the OTDR picture (or "trace") takes a lot of words to describe all the information in it!

The slope of the fiber trace shows the attenuation coefficient of the fiber and is calibrated in dB/km by the OTDR. Connectors and splices are called "events" in OTDR jargon. Both should show a loss, but connectors and mechanical splices will also show a reflective peak. The height of that peak will indicate the amount of reflection at the event.

Reflective pulses can show you the resolution of the OTDR. You cannot see two events closer than is allowed by the pulse width. Generally longer pulse widths are used to be able to see farther along the cable plant and narrower pulses are used when high resolution is needed, although it limits the distance the OTDR can see.

1.What is the wavelength of the SS303T?

SS303T OTDR only has the wavelengths for testing single-mode fiber - 1310nm, 1550nm. it does not support the measurement of multi-mode fiber for the time being. If you need to test multimode fiber, please purchase SS313T, SS315T, SS322T series OTDR.

2.What is the difference between SS303T-2A1 and SS303T-2A2?

The only difference between SS303T-2A1 and SS303T-2A2 is that the fiber optic adapters are equipped differently, the SS303T-2A1 is equipped with SC+FC adapters, but the SS303T-2A2 is equipped with SC+FC+ST+LC adapters, and all other configurations are exactly the same.

3.What is the maximum dynamic range of the SS303T? What is the maximum test distance?

The maximum dynamic range of SS303T is 24dB(1310nm),22dB(1550nm). The maximum test distance is 70Km/43.5mi.

4.Can the SS303T test multimode fiber?

No. SS303T only has the wavelengths of 1310nm and 1550nm for testing single-mode fiber, and if you need to test multimode fiber, you need to use the wavelengths of 850nm or 1300nm, so the SS303T does not support the testing of multimode fibers, if you need to test multimode fibers, please purchase the SS313T, SS315T or SS322T series OTDR.

5.What is the difference between Auto OTDR mode and Expert OTDR mode?

Expert OTDR Mode: Users who are not satisfied with the automatic mode or are very familiar with fiber optic testing can set up various parameters for the test according to actual needs, such as test range, attenuation pass/fail thresholds, event display thresholds, pulse width, etc., in order to meet the requirements of fault detection and fiber optic link certification.
