Fiber optic power meter / OPM is an instrument used to measure the size of optical power. It is mainly used in fiber optic communication systems. It is an essential basic test tool for research, development and production as well as construction and maintenance departments. The optical power meter can measure the absolute optical power or the relative loss of optical power through a section of optical fiber, thereby evaluating the performance of the optical terminal equipment.

The working principle of the optical power meter is based on the photoelectric effect and signal processing technology. The team started by identifying the core issues in existing power meters. Many devices were either too bulky, difficult to operate, or had limited wavelength support. To solve these problems, SKYSHL’s engineers designed the SS101PVA and SS101PVC, two compact, high-precision optical power meters capable of testing both single-mode and multi-mode fiber networks.

One major breakthrough was the wide dynamic range. The SS101PVA supports power measurements from -70 to +50 dBm, making it ideal for ultra-low-power signals, while the SS101PVC covers -50 to +26 dBm, catering to higher power applications. SS101PVA and SS101PVC support six key wavelengths—850nm, 1300nm, 1310nm, 1490nm, 1550nm, and 1625nm—ensuring compatibility across different fiber network types.

The engineering team also integrated a high-precision photodetector and signal processing technology, allowing for accurate power measurement with minimal deviation. To enhance usability, they equipped the power meters with a 2.5mm universal adapter and interchangeable SC, FC, and LC connectors, providing maximum flexibility for field technicians.

They only differ in the measurement range, SS101PVA provides a test range of -70dBm to +8dBm, while SS101PVC provides a test range of -50dBm to +26dBm.

3.Is it possible to measure optical loss and optical continuity using only the SS101PVA or SS101PVC?

If you are testing a device with optical signal output (such as an optical module, a switch with optical ports, a transceiver module with optical ports, etc.), you can measure the absolute optical power data or loss data using only SS101PVA or SS101PVC. If you are testing a device without optical signal output, you need to add a fiber optic light source (such as SS100 or SS103 fiber optic light source), and then use them in pairs to measure the optical loss data or the continuity of the optical fiber link.

4.Can the SS101PVA&SS101PVC be supplied with a lithium battery as a power supply?

Yes, the SS101PVA&SS101PVC OPM comes standard with 3 AA batteries. In fact, the SS101PVA&SS101PVC OPM is so energy efficient that it can work continuously for 20 hours with a 10-minute automatic shutdown function (needs to be turned on), and AA batteries are very easy to obtain, making it even more convenient.
Of course, we also provide 3.7V 300mah lithium batteries for customers to choose (not included, optional), because it is a non-standard accessory, you must contact us to buy it before purchase.
